Has vivido en Suecia?”

Al ser un viajero del mundo, una persona de tercera cultura, un nómada global, tiene sus cosas buenas;

Lo he experimentado yo mismo.

When “where are you from?” is a complicated question

So, today I suddenly saw on the internet  a link to a short film “When “where are you from?” is a complicated question” Interested by its title, I decided to watch it.

It’s a video about Third culture kids, TCK; people who have spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. These people frequently build relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any.

And I’m one of them.

When people ask me where I’m from, the easy answer is “the Netherlands”. But when people start to know me, they might notice that sometimes I say things like “when I lived in Sweden...” or “In brazil…” and people’s reaction is “What?? You’ve lived in Sweden?” to which my response is often an unsecure yes, followed by a long explanation of all the places I’ve lived, which somehow always makes me feel very embarrassed.

Yes, I’ve lived in a lot of countries. According to others, because to me, having lived in 8 different places, 5 countries, and 11 schools is my reality; it’s normal to me.

Anyway, you don’t have to have travelled so much as me to be a Third Culture Kid, in fact, the video showed mostly people from one culture, who spent their childhood in another country. And I know a lot of those people. In fact, most of my friends are third culture kids, and they are great people; open, tolerant, intelligent, fun and very grown up for their age.

Being a world traveler, a Third Culture Kid, a Global nomad, has its good things;
  •        You learn to be very tolerant and respectful.
  •        You’re linguistic development is so much higher (I speak 3 languages fluently, and can understand another 4).
  •         You are very good at adapting to new situations.
  •         You get to know a whole variety of cultures and when to switch from one to the other in different situations.
  •         You develop excellent communication and diplomatic skills.
  •          Even in studies and careers we stand out; 4 more times probability to earn a bachelors degree, and in high-skilled positions as profession.

But then, you can’t expect so much good without some downside, right? Imagine, like me, saying goodbye every 2 years of friends, culture, places and people I loved, and starting all over again to learn a new culture, a new language, to make new friends, to adapt.
  •         The enormous majority will always feel like outsides, no matter where they are.
  •         Barely any of us knows where home is.
  •         Questions of “where you’re from, who you are, what you are, who you can trust” only confuses us, as often we feel without a real identity.
  •         As your life radically changes, we often feel chronically uprooted and are confronted with much more experience of loss than the average person. Thus, unresolved grief is often one of the most important mental health issues.

And then there is the return to the home country. I’ve experienced it myself. And to me, the Netherlands is no more my home than any other country. It goes along with so many difficult feelings: people expect you to be happy being back “home”, but is has never been your home. You don’t know how to act; because how can it be expected from you to know how to behave culturally when you’ve barely ever lived there? Going back to the country of your parents can be a complete and profound culture shock.

Maybe all this sounds very negative. And yes, being a global nomad does have its downsides. But what have I learnt from it? What are the important lessons I’ve learnt from living in so many places?

I’m not afraid to travel, and go and live somewhere else. I have complete confidence that I can eventually make a home everywhere around the world. I’m open-minded, tolerant, and have an enormous insight in cultures and people. I’ve seen far more of the world then many will ever see, and I’ve learnt from it.

Despite the negative effects, I would never wish to have stayed in just one place. I’m a global citizen, a traveler, and I give thanks to the opportunities from which I have learnt and grown as a person. I’ve had an opportunity that not many people get, and I’m grateful for that. I’m a free person, and am maybe less terrified then people who have never left their birth country to leave everything behind and roam the world.

Day of Tolerance/Dia de la Tolerancia

In our globalizing world, tolerance is more essential than ever before.  It is being tested, and in the face of economic and social pressures, some seek to exploit fears and highlight differences to create hatred. Thus, dialogue must prevail over violence, understanding over indifference, knowledge of others over ignorance and prejudice. Sadly, tolerance often remains misunderstood.

Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. It is fostered by knowledge, openness, communication, and freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Tolerance is harmony in difference. Tolerance, the virtue that makes peace possible, contributes to the replacement of the culture of war by a culture of peace. Above all, tolerance is an act — the act of reaching out to others and seeing differences not as barriers, but as invitations for dialogue and understanding. No society can hope to flourish if it does not promote this essential virtue.  Tolerance is an essential condition for peace, democracy and sustainable development

Tolerance should not be mistaken for concession or condescension.  Genuine tolerance is about openness, curiosity and communication. It goes hand in hand with knowledge and understanding.
Nor should tolerance be confused with indifference.  Being tolerant does not mean being passive in the face of racism, xenophobia and exclusion, or silent when minorities, refugees and other vulnerable groups face abuse.  Tolerance is an injunction to all of us to stand up and speak out in defense of all who are deprived of their fundamental rights and freedoms.

Tolerance cannot be taken for granted.  It has to be taught, nurtured and communicated.  Education, inside and outside the classroom, is essential for strengthening tolerance and for combating hatred and discrimination, by revealing similarities between people and spreading a healthy respect for differences.
In these times, we must invent new ways to strengthen the binds that bring us together. We must reach out to young women and men, as they are those whom carry the greatest burden of change.

More than ever, the work for tolerance requires a renewed engagement from every one of us.  On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to tolerance, dialogue and solidarity, among ourselves, in our families and our communities, as well as in our relations with other nations and peoples of the world.

Thank you
(Based on United Nations Message for International Day for Tolerance)

Gracias

World kindness day/ Dia de la Bondad

The purpose of World Kindness Day is to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realise we are citizens of the world. As world citizens we have a commonality, and must realise that if progress is to be made in human relations and endeavours, if we are to achieve the goal of peaceful coexistence, we must focus on what we have in common. When we find likenesses we begin to experience empathy, and in such a state we can fully relate to that person or those people. While we may think of people from other cultures as being ‘different’ when we compare them with our own customs and beliefs, it doesn’t mean that we are any better than they are. When we become friends with someone from a different culture we discover that despite some obvious differences, there are many similarities.

If we were to ask ourselves on a regular basis, "Is what I am involved in at this moment promoting joining or separation?” it would remind us of our commitment to kindness. All it requires is remembering. Simple solutions are workable solutions. Simple solutions to promote joining, working away at our goal for world peace with little acts of kindness, helping to break down the walls that separate races, religions, cultures. Helping our global brothers and sisters.

We can be co-creators of a better world, and we can have a positive effect on world peace, when we bring order into our lives. Be what you want the world to be. Is that difficult? Only if you think it is! When we accept the reality that we can create positive change, we move beyond ourselves, our limitations, our doubts, and realize our infinite power. Anthropologist Margaret Mead said, Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

Joseph Campbell tells us, "People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive." The ‘rapture of being alive’ is truly a wonderful expression, don’t you think? Such raptures give real purpose to our lives. When we carry out an act of kindness it creates a good feeling within us, which surely could be termed as one of the raptures of being alive.

As the name implies, World Kindness Day is about being kind to the world. The ‘Lonely Planet’ not only refers to a travel guide, it is descriptive of the Earth – the only planet in our solar system known to be teeming with life. It’s all we have, and it’s in everyone’s best interest to make it the nicest place to live, because it’s the only place we have to live. Yet all we’ve done since the dawn of civilization is to destroy anything that stands in our way. And what price do we place on the homeless, the brutalized, the addicted, the downtrodden, the impoverished, and the ever widening gap between the wealthy and the needy? Isn’t it time everyone began thinking more about others and less about themselves? There is an obsession in society for a number of things, one of them is the accumulation of material wealth, far beyond that required to live a comfortable life. The power that wealth brings seems to be irresistible to some. But it can have a down side, and we hear from time to time about the principles of such people becoming a casualty.

World Kindness Day is the beginning of a global reaction to the exploitation of our human and natural resources. It could be said that the slogan for World Kindness Day might well be "Healing the World!" – and in doing so, there is the possibility of creating something so intrinsically good and wholesome, that the beneficial effects could be virtually endless.

Ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas globales.

Education in Economics / Educacion en Economía

Today I have yet another theme to write about. Economy.

Only the word Economy already bores or gives the shivers to many people, and it seems as a mysterious, abstract and strange world. People in the business world surely know more about it, as they have learnt little by little about its functioning and secrets. But you know what? We’re not all business people, we’re not all economists. We don’t all have a deep knowledge of how the economy works, and how to apply it to our own lives. And even less when we are younger, when we are just starting to live and introduce ourselves in the economical world

And how could we? From where are we supposed to learn about Economy? As far as I know, if Economy is taught at high schools, it’s only as an optional subject. And in most of the academic studies Economy doesn’t even exist. So for most people, once they start being independent that will be the first time in their lives when they come in direct contact with the economical world. With what tools? Most of the time nothing, and only if they are very lucky they have parents of friends who give them good advice.

So is it so surprising that the world is in an economic crisis, considering the fact that most people have no idea about how to manage their money? For decades the banks been giving money to everyone, without making people aware about the consequences of borrowing money, without honestly telling them what a foolish idea it was to spend more money then you have. But then, of course, the banks only got richer and richer how more money the people borrowed and how less the people knew. So I can understand why the banking system was so reluctant to tell the risks of borrowing money. It’s all about money and power, I fear.

But well. We’re all in this now; the economic crisis. There is no escaping it. But what I really want to know; if we are already 4 years like this, and there are predictions that this will go on for much longer, WHY hasn’t anyone taken more efficient measures to make the people conscious about the economy, their role in it and how to help overcome the crisis?  If we have such great governments, why has NOBODY thought of educating the people? Because people, that’s it.

If you expect people to have knowledge about economy and to make all the correct decisions that impulse economic growth without any former education about it, then you are plainly stupid! Economics is NOT an innate knowledge of the human being. Rather, most people are confused by it, stunned, and very easily deceived by people who only too much want to profit from this lack of knowledge.

People so easily ramble on about the economical mistakes other people or nations make, but hey! It’s because almost no one has received a good education about it!! This is just so infuriating, realizing this, how we’ve been kept in the dark, how the government has never invested in teaching us the fundamentals of Economics. How could people have ever overlooked the importance of a good education in Economics, in this world that is basically working on Economy?

Honestly, why not teach Economics at high school? Subject like biology or technology are not always as useful to everybody, but Economics IS! If you’re planning to live, then you will encounter economics at some point in your life and never get rid of it.

There are so many ways to better the world, so many ways to overcome the crisis. But I thought other people were thinking up solutions. Come on! It can’t be that a 20 year old student thinks up something that thousands of politicians haven’t, right? Because it’s EDUCATION, dear people, that is the solution to EVERYTHING.  To the economical crisis, the environmental problems, the social problems, simply everything. WHY isn’t there more investment in educating us, people? Why are we only taught mathematics, languages and a few sciences at school, but not how to live in the modern world?

I believe, if governments are really for us, the people, the nations of the world, that they should start thinking up educational programs tomorrow. With every year that passes only more people lack knowledge of how to live in this world, of how to be sustainable in all aspects -economically, socially and environmentally.

What benefits are there to keep the people uneducated? There are so many benefits from educating everyone, so there must be a heck of a reason why no government has ever invested in this.

Well... it's an interesting theme. Really worth considering for everybody. Because it affects us, all of us.
