importance of education / importancia de la educación

Especially the last few weeks i have been thinking a lot about the importance of education. I have always found it fundamentally important for the development of the human mind.

Regretfully, it seems as if education is still not valued much. It’s only a few decades since education is accessible to almost everyone in the developed countries, but it seems as if many people feel indifferent towards education, or even think it’s useless.

A good example is when you go to schools of 12-16 year olds. I know just such example, a school where I also went to. Observe a while and you will hear the greatest part of the youngsters comment that they hate school, that it doesn’t serve them, that it’s only a waste of time and energy. Of course, teenagers are almost a human species apart, being in the age of mayor changes and rebellion, but I still find it disgraceful, disrespectful and untgrateful that they say such things. And surely those ideas don’t just come from them. Parents and culture too have a part in that. in places where there has always been work to find no matter if you were unschooled, it is now hard to accept for the people that it is important to be educated, or else you will not find work and you will not be able to sustain yourself and your family. Besides, in these times that we call “crisis”,  many of the poorer families don’t even want to send their children to school, because to them its seen as a waste of money and time, and the child can better do “useful work”, even if they are underage.

Surely, how you think about education depends a lot on whether you have had good, motivating teachers, or if you have only had teachers that humiliated and treated you badly. And it also depends on the amount of self-discipline and love for learning one has. Of course, this whole thing of “bad/good teacher” is really quite subjective. I have had teachers everyone else called bad, but who always treated me kindly and respectful because they knew me and my love for knowledge. And teachers are also often called bad because they are driven to craziness by classes full of- excuse me- rebellious, uninterested, wild human-like creatures called teenagers.

But of course, now I am talking about education referring to schools. But to me education is not only about learning about something that happened in some past moment, or about the orthographic rules of a language, or the mysteries of nature. Which of course are all gone through a highly selective filter so that the youngsters are only teached what the government wants them to know. A bit off topic, but nevertheless two things I would like to comment here about history classes: every nation loves to narrate exaggeratingly nice about the things they’ve done right, but are very silent about the horrendous things they’ve done. And the second thing: if we are supposed to get history classes so that we learn from the past; then why are we still making the same mistakes as we made years ago with certain things?

Ok, well, to get back to my subject. My belief is that education should also include teachings about LIFE. Which to me seems absolutely basic, but nevertheless it has never even been considered to be teached at schools. But be honest with yourself: What is more important than learning about peace, love, respect? What is more important than learning to be grateful, to care about others, and to care about the Earth?

But no... Schools are too busy teaching children about facts, many of which are absolutely useless in daily life, whilst to me it seems just as important, or even more important, that children learn about life, about how to care for themselves, about how to care about others. About how to love and be happy.

It just saddens me deeply, knowing that so many people in the world have never been shown the most basic things that will undoubtly grant you a happy life. I’m not saying an easy life, but a happier one. Happiness comes from inside. But someone does have to show you the correct road to follow.

I'm not finished writing about this subject, and at a certain moment I will continue saying more about this. If you want to comment me anything, you're free to do so. Thank you again for reading my blog dear reader!

Muchas gracias querido lector por leer mi blog :)

The Elders/ Los "Elders"

Kofi Annan, Ela Bhatt, Lakhdar Brahimi, Gro Brundtland, Fernando H Cardoso, Jimmy Carter, Graça Machel ,Mary Robinson, Desmond Tutu, Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela

Today I have found a very interesting website: http://www.theelders.org . It’s an international NGO of men and woman known as former statesmen, peace activists, and human rights advocates. The goal for the Elders is to use their "almost 1,000 years of collective experience" to work on solutions for problems like climate change, HIV/AIDS, and poverty, as well as to "use their political independence to help resolve some of the world's most intractable conflicts".

Great names like Kofi Annan, Ela Bhatt, Gro Brundtland, Graça Machel and Nelson Mandela are between them. All man and woman whom have meant (and who are still meaning!) a lot for the world. They are change makers, leaders, pioneers. They are bold people, desiring the best for all, and believing in the difference every single person can make.  In short, they are a great inspiration for people like me. I feel proud to live in this era of the world knowing that there are such people working so hard at defending human rights.

These are the kind of people whom inspire me. These are the ones whom give me hope that I too can maybe mean something to the world. No, I don’t say this because I want to be famous or known. That doesn’t interest me. What I want is to help making a change. For the better. I have always wanted to help, whether it is helping an animal, a friend or the entire world. I wish to spend my lifetime usefully: Helping at making a difference, and thus better the lives of many.

How much would I wish to meet those great people. Surely, they are also “just” humans, not perfect in all aspects of their lives, like all of us, but that doesn’t take away the great value they have for our world. How much would I like to talk, and listen too. Listen patiently, learning from these wise elders.

Because wise is what they are. What is my own youth and humble knowledge compared to their wisdom? Little. Although I am focused on spending my life gaining wisdom, so as to help and guide others.

Thank you, great humans, thank you all whom have lived throughout the ages of men, for you are my greatest inspiration.

the importance of a hug/ La importancia de un abrazo

The act of embracing others is very important, to you as well as the persons you hug. It’s a social act, one that has so much importance that our body responds to it liberating certain substances which make us feel good and happy. Don’t you find, when you hug someone (who you’re comfortable with, obviously) you feel safe, happy, and calm? It’s because of the neurological responses our bodies have to hugs.

We are a social species. And by being social, we need physical contact. Without it we would literally die. I’ll give you an example: If a baby is not touched at all during the first stage of life, it will die, or else have grave social and physical development problems. This is because the physical contact a baby receives triggers the formation of neurological connections in the brain, essential for survival. Without these physical stimulations, the baby could simply not make those neuroconnections.

But of course, despite our need for physical contact, many try to avoid as much as possible physical contact. Many feel uncomfortable with physical contact, due to a lot of different possible reasons. Many say they don’t need it, that they are okay with being isolated in that way from others. Maybe they really think they are okay, but I truly believe that physical isolation in that way from others does affect a person. Of course, I’m neither scientist nor a psychologist, but I do know a lot, thanks to my own experiences and thanks to precise observation of my surroundings.

I believe in the importance of a hug. I believe in the healing power and the joy and energy it transfers. And whether it is a hug from your parents, siblings, friends, partner, and no matter what underlying meaning it has, it is important.

I know sometimes it is hard to hug certain people. Especially if it is not your normal way of social interaction. I have friends I hug often, and others I have never hugged. But I do want to recommend you, even if you are avoidant of hugging others, just try to hug someone. It makes you and the person you hug feel better. Try to be open, look out for people who need a hug. The hug you give them might be just enough to get them through the day.

Maybe, dear reader, you don’t understand why I’m writing all this about hugs. Maybe you have never felt how truly important it is in certain moments of life. Maybe you simply don’t need hugs so much as I do. But I can tell you, for me a hug says more than hours of conversation. For me a hug can help cure all wounds and sorrows. For me a hug can help to on the way of self-acceptance.  For me, hugging someone I love means being safe, safe from a world which still scares me sometimes. For me, hugging this one special person I love with all my soul, means being at home. More home than any terrestrial house I have ever lived in.

This is also what happens in real life. Some people  really want to give/recieve a hug, but  thanks to prejudices  others ignore them.

Tengo amigos a quien abrazo a menudo, y otros quienes nunca he abrazado.
