I don’t really like writing about politics. A political belief is something quite personal; everyone has their own ideals and interests. But sometimes it is important to talk about it, because sometimes there is need for us to think, instead of only to see and watch what “the powerful ones” are doing with our world.

So I want to talk about democracy. Democracy is generally defined as a form of government in which all adult citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the proposal, development and passage of legislation into law. 

But true democracy has never really existed. Because only a few get the opportunities and chances to become a candidate to be chosen: money, power, the right family, good contacts, a nice way of talking, making many nice seeming promises etc. People who would truly make good leaders of countries never get the chance, or simply never take the opportunity, to become one. Besides, let’s also think about the people who vote. A great part never bothers to vote, another part just votes someone without really knowing anything, and others vote for someone because they believe all the pretty lies.

Leaders aren’t really chosen because of their deep knowledge of the world, but rather through a long process of coming higher up in the political hierarchy, good luck and a good way of making their words seem a lot nicer than they really are.

But let’s just imagine, for a moment, that instead of the powerful, the rich and the nice speaking ones, that our leaders would be people, men and woman, with a great knowledge of the world, people who have not only studies economy, rights, or politics, but also other things. People who are deep thinkers about life, people who know what it is to be one more of the nation, who know what the true wishes are of their nation. People who care about their country as if it were their own child and not a monopoly game with only objective so as to gain more money and power.

All this makes me think about Plato, yes, the great philosopher from ancient Greece. He was very upset about the aristocracy of then, and proposed that only the truly wise should govern, so as to provide the best for all.

All this really came because my mother one morning came all upset towards me saying “you always say that everything is finite right? Do you think... that our democracy is also coming to an end?”

Well, to an end it will surely come. I’m not quite sure if that will be next month, next year or next decade. But it will end, just as all political tendencies. Although, I must put emphasis on that the theoretical democracy is still a good plan, but in practical life it just can’t be applied in such way as so to satisfy all the theoretical criteria’s. It’s just as communism. I know how many people are in contra of that, but after reading the ideas of Marx I was surprised by what a good idea it was (because, of course, he didn’t write it to molest or harm the people, but rather because he say a change was needed and he wished the best for the people). But it’s impossible to put it into practice.

So... we should actually go and look for a new political movement, one that in theory as well as in practice works truly. Of course, this is something many people fear. After all, we’re all human, and not very fond of great changes. Better to just get used to the idea, as one day a big change will start, and we all together must try to make it for the better.

No me gusta escribir sobre política. Una ideología política es algo muy personal, cada uno tiene sus propios ideales e intereses. Pero a veces es importante hablar de ello, porque a veces es necesario para nosotros pensar, en lugar de sólo ver y observar lo que "los poderosos" están haciendo con nuestro mundo.

Así que quiero hablar de democracia. La democracia se define generalmente como una forma de gobierno en el que todos los ciudadanos adultos tienen el mismo peso en las decisiones que afectan sus vidas. Idealmente, esto incluye igual participación en la propuesta, el desarrollo y aprobación de la legislación en ley.

Pero la verdadera democracia nunca ha existido realmente. Debido a que sólo unos pocos consiguen las oportunidades y posibilidades para convertirse en un candidato para ser elegido: dinero, poder, la familia correcta, buenos contactos, una buena manera de hablar, hacer muchas promesas que parecen agradable, etc. Las personas quien serian verdaderamente buenos líderes de los países nunca tienen la oportunidad, o simplemente no aprovechan las oportunidades, para convertirse en uno. Además, también vamos a pensar en la gente quién vota. Una gran parte ni siquiera vota, otra parte votan a alguien sin saber nada, y otros votan a alguien porque creen todas las mentiras bonitas.

Los líderes no son realmente escogidos debido a su profundo conocimiento del mundo, sino más bien a través de un largo proceso de subir más y más en la jerarquía política, gracias a la buena suerte y una buena manera de hacer que sus palabras parecen mucho más agradables de lo que realmente son.
Pero vamos a imaginar por un momento, que en lugar de los poderosos, los ricos y los de habla bonito, que nuestros líderes sean personas (hombres y mujeres) con un gran conocimiento del mundo,  personas quien no únicamente han estudiado economía, derecho, o política, sino también otras cosas.  Personas quien son pensadores profundos acerca de la vida, personas quien saben lo que es ser uno más de la nación, quien saben lo que son los verdaderos deseos de su pueblo.  Personas que se preocupan por su país como si fuera su propio hijo y no un juego de monopolio con el único objetivo de ganar más dinero y poder.

Todo esto me hace pensar en Platón, sí, el gran filósofo de la antigua Grecia. Él estaba muy preocupado por la aristocracia de entonces, y proponía que sólo los verdaderos sabios deben gobernar, a fin de proporcionar lo mejor para todos.

Todo esto en realidad vine porque mi madre una mañana llegó muy preocupada hacia mí diciendo: "siempre dices que todo está finito ¿verdad? ¿Crees que... que nuestra democracia también está llegando a su fin? "

Bueno, el fin sin duda vendrá. No estoy muy seguro de si eso será el mes que viene, el año que viene o en la próxima década. Pero va a terminar, al igual que todas las tendencias políticas. Aunque, debo resaltar que la democracia teórica sigue siendo un buen plan, pero en la vida práctica simplemente no puede ser aplicado de tal manera como para satisfacer todos los criterios teóricos. Es así como el comunismo. Yo sé cuánta gente está en contra de eso, pero después de leer las ideas de Marx, me sorprendió por lo buena idea que era (porque, por supuesto, él no escribió para molestar o perjudicar al pueblo, sino más bien porque vi que un cambio era necesario y deseaba lo mejor para el pueblo). Pero es imposible ponerla en práctica.

Así que... en realidad, deberíamos ir en búsqueda de un nuevo movimiento político, que en la teoría como en la práctica funciona de verdad. Por supuesto, esto es algo que mucha gente teme. Porque evidentemente, todos somos humanos, y no muy aficionado a los grandes cambios. Pero es mejor acostumbrarme a la idea, ya que algún día el cambio sí que vendrá, y tenemos que juntarnos todos para que el cambio sea para lo mejor.
