Copies of society / copias de la sociedad

How sad it is that so many people live behind their masks. Showing the world a person who is "cool, interesting, handsome, funny” and so on. They try to be like the others, without showing their true self, hiding forever, ashamed of themselves. How sad ... because beside the fact that they lie to others, they also lie to themselves, something even worse. They do not understand that to be truly happy you must be who you truly are. And not a copy of society, always carrying a mask behind which they hide their true self ...
And the saddest thing is that people actually think that being copies of the society is the only way to be happy. Little by little eliminating who they really are and moving away even more and more from true happiness ....
Well, everyone can do as he/she wishes. If you are really convinced that by being a copy of society you will be happy… I will not judge you. all I am doing is expressing myself here because I desire true happiness for everyone

fears about future challenge / miedos sobre futuros retos

This week I am really going to start my study at the UNED (university at distance). For months I have looked forward to it, wishing this moment to come. But now that it is about to begin, I am filled with doubts and fears. I don’t feel capable of doing it; a million questions go around in my brain. What if I’m not smart enough? How am I ever going to be able to study so much? How am I ever going to manage the hundreds, thousands, of pages of information all on my own, as with this university you don’t go to classes and have teachers explaining it all for you…
I’m scared. Yes. Now that the time has finally come I doubt more about myself than ever before.

But… there are thoughts that can help me. Thoughts that tell me that there is no need to be scared. Thoughts that might also help you, dear reader, if you are in a situation like me about to begin a new challenge in life and doubting yourself:

-millions of people before me have studied at the university, and thousands at the UNED, and they have all made it. Some will have been a lot smarter than me, but surely that some were also less smart. I am not the only one

-then most important: step by step. This challenge now seems an endless mountain of 4 long years. Looking at something in this way would discourage even the strongest. Just look how it goes step by step. No one has ever climbed a mountain in one enormous step, but in a million, billion little steps, always thinking about where to put the foot next. So that is what I will do.

I hope, in four years time, I will be able to proudly announce to have ended my academic study of environmental sciences. But for the moment, four years to the future seems endlessly far away, and all I will focus on is next week.

Have a good day dear reader! May you overcome all your challenges and be happy.

Men often become what they believe themselves to be.
If I believe I can't do something,  it makes me incapable of doing it.
But when I believe I can, then I aquire the ability to do it even if I didnt have it at the beginning.

The passing of time / El paso del tiempo

Time passes so fast. Before you know another week, month, year has passed. Ok, I “only” am 19 years old, and some who are older than me might say I ought not say such a thing yet, but I am old enough to notice the pass of time, old enough to be conscious of the days slipping through my hands like sand, bringing change, modifying life. Never the same, always in metamorphosis.

I do not regret the pass of time. It is something beautiful. It is something extraordinary, though it is not normally seen as such, but more rather as a regret, a sorrow, or simply as the most normal thing there is.  Well, like I have just said; I find it beautiful the pass of time. Why? Because… because with every day you live you accumulate more experiences, more knowledge, you live more good and bad moments, you learn, you see.

I wouldn’t recommend you to regret the pass of time. I know people tend to regret it because of missed opportunities, missed chances, or because of a deep missing of past good moments. Well, as for the opportunities and chances; you made your choices long ago, when you thought them to be right, don’t grief about them now, you have taken this path, and that’s it. Just be happy about your life and also, if needed, forgive yourself for the choices you made which you now regret. It might be important.

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday

I am who I am, and proud to be so! / soy quien soy, y orgullosa de ello!

Am I arrogant if I believe in myself, my abilities, my intelligence and my own strength? Arrogant because I have the belief that everything will be okay? Am I arrogant if I say I have more than many other people (and here I don’t mean the material things in life...)? Am I a bad friend because I don’t like to party, shop, get drunk etc with my friends? Am I a boring person because I find peace and harmony in solitude and meditation? Am I weird if I do things differently than most girls my age? Am I disrespectful because I respect and understand other religions and cultures other than Europe and Christianity? Am I offensive because I criticize our materialistic and self-destructive society? Am I stupid to believe that I have found happiness and love? Am I weak to have needed a year off from studies? Am I selfish for (finally!) doing something for ME, and not for others?

NO. I think not. Sure, you can judge my decisions, my attitude, my being. But I do not care. I am who I am and very proud of it. YES! In some ways it almost seems taboo that someone says he/she is proud of him/herself, at being smart, being pretty, being the best at something. It looks like if in this society we have to feel embarrassed about ourselves and focus on our flaws and imperfections. Isn’t it anymore allowed to feel good just the way you are, with all our imperfections and failures? Apparently not.  Our society is sometimes quite pathetic...

So, I am proud to be who I am. I know I have a good brain, I know I learned much more about life than most people my age, I know I have to be critical. I am a good (But not perfect!) friend, sister, girlfriend, daughter, because I'm trying to give love. I am unique, and I choose to ignore fashion and do what others want me to do. I deserved that year off, ohh you don’t know how much... I am someone who tries (and increasingly gets better!) to respect both body and mind, and tries as best I can to find harmony. I am someone who will fight until the last moment for the things I care about. I am someone who does not give much importance to material needs, but so much more important to me is to find happiness in my own heart, and to help others to do so too. And I know that I have found true happiness and love.

I have every reason to be proud of myself. And guess what? I'm happy, very happy, to be unique

Just like everyone else has EVERY reason to be proud of him/ herself..

(And yes ... I am a critical person. it’s not my intention to offend anyone with this text, I’m just expressing my opinion)

NO.

Some time ago I saw an autobiographic movie, “Prozac nation” about a girl with depression. Not an especially good movie in my eyes, it doesn’t show the complexity of depression, how it acts like a dark monster that slowly takes over. It doesn’t show the evolution of the depression, nor its causes.  To me it just doesn’t bring over the entire message. Of course, everyone lives depression differently, perceives it in a different way. The book I suppose is much better, or there hadn’t been so many positive comments. But ok, apart from my opinion about the book, I want to talk about depression.

In the last decade, in most (developed?) countries the use of antidepressants has doubled. In the USA alone almost 10 % of the whole population! But from which 25% were incorrectly diagnosed for depression. Ok, you might think now; why does this topic seem relevant to me, the author? Well, I’ll tell you; it’s quite worrying that so many people seem to have depression, but maybe even more that nowadays every time you feel a little down it is immediately said to be depression and more than necessary antidepressant drugs are sold. And they are drugs. Just look at what they do to your brain to make depression go over, what secondary effects they have…and that is without even mentioning the grave effects to the environment they have!

So… is this the beginning of a worldwide depression epidemic? Is everyone going to end up being depressive? Or do we just use the term depression to come away from all the responsibilities, all the pressure, all the chaos and stress? Do we use it as a sort of excuse (unconsciously)?  Are we really all so depressed, is it a worldwide phenomena originated by a stressful lifestyle and all the insecurities life brings? Or are there just more cases of depression due to a rapid increase in the population? I don’t know. I’m no psychiatric, so I must not judge things I don’t know about.

But if I were allowed to tell my opinion, I would say; yes, depression is becoming more common. Because life as it is nowadays is very demanding, with a lot of pressure and a lot of (physical and psychological!) stress. Of course now you can say to me than in the prehistory people also suffered from stress and difficulties for survival, but that was a natural pressure, not a cultural/economic one.

Not a very positive thought, that so many people are depressed, right? Even more reason to try to be as happy as possible, and let the light of your joy shine on those who feel lost in the dark.
