Happiness

What is happines? Where does it come from, and where does it go? Why do some seem to have it in such plentiful amounts, and others struggle to hold on to it, and yet others lose the connection with it for years?

I suppose most people have asked themselves, in one way or another, such questions once in a while.  And even more so nowadays, when we live in a world full of self help books that supposedly will guide you in an eye blink to happiness . A world where being happy, even if it’s just false appearance, is the norm. A world where we sadly compare our lives with that of others on social media, in search of our own happiness, and at the same time trying to feel ourselves better than the rest.

Happiness. It’s such a charged word nowadays. We might have forgotten the essence of happiness, just like we’ve forgotten the essence of love, and beauty, and all other fundamental things in life. I have decided that the word happiness is, although with a beautiful intrinsic meaning, not my word anymore.

My word is beingBeing? Yes, right, being.  24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of our lives, it is expected of us to be something, and to be it in the best possible way. It is expected that we are perfect children, perfect adolescents, perfect friends, perfect partners, perfect parents. It is expected that we excel in our studies, careers and on social level. When someone is asked who he or she is, the answer will include the name, and a long list of attributes, like, I’m a mom, I’m a director here, I’m a scientist there, I’m the daughter of this person, I’m the owner of that...and so on. And ok, it’s alright to know what your place in the social world is, but, do you know who you areWhat makes up your essence? Well, to me, it is your being. And by being completely you, that is, by the most simple and (at the same time) complex act of being, you can find what we call happiness.

But being completely you, that’s a damn scary thing.  We tend to change ourselves in order to blend in into society (we’re social animals after all) but somewhere down the road we lose ourselves, stop simply being the person you truly are, and start acting an apparently perfect play for the outer world.

In any case, being completely oneself is hard, and even more so in places where your physical or mental wellbeing is put into peril if you express your true self. But if you want to have a try at being happy, at being you, maybe some of the following ideas might help:

·         Recognize and appreciate the small things in life. Wasn’t that a beautiful sunset you’ve just missed because you were stuck to your smartphone? Didn’t a loved one just remind you how much he or she loves you? So often we encounter small gifts in life, but as we are so spoiled, we don’t even see them, and eternally wait for something bigger, better  and more beautiful to come, without realizing that it is all happening now.

·         Which leads us to the next idea: live in the now! Ok, how cliché.  And how true! We keep ourselves busy with thousands of tasks, thoughts, and other mess, so much that we avoid living in the moment.  I think it’s because we fear the brilliance and greatness of living in the moment, as it can be a very powerful experience. On the other side, we are so addicted to distraction (just watch how many people are inseparable from their electronic devices nowadays) and drama about the past and future, that we prefer to just ignore the now and munch on the binge diet of unhappiness.

·         Gratitude. That’s a biiiig word, and has a very high happiness factor. Being grateful for something is, in short, accepting and feeling grateful about something ordinary in our lives, in such a way that it becomes extraordinary. That something can vary from a smile from a stranger to a loving hug of your partner, from eating homemade cookies (made by mum), to doing that what you love most. It doesn’t matter what you appreciate, as long as you appreciate it! There are so much beautiful things in life, and much of it we never fully appreciate it until the moment it isn't there anymore.

In any case, lots more things can contribute to a sense of wellbeing. Being in nature, spending time on (constructive) social relationships, feeling safe and protected... We must not forget that satisfying our most basic needs also contribute to the level of happiness one experiences. Nor must we forget that happiness is essentially something you can find in your interior, and thus no matter how much temporal satisfaction you feel by obtaining material goods, the only true happiness is that which emanates from your being.

So, after a good hour of being in my element, enjoying myself whilst writing and listening to classical music, I can say that, writing about happiness is good reminder for myself, as lately I’ve felt unable to connect with that great feeling that tells me that I am satisfying all my needs and simply being me.  To be honest, I could just go on and on writing, but as I’m not planning to write a book about happiness, I’d better stop writing ;)

Anyway, there is no foolproof road to happiness. It’s often a difficultunclear and strange journey, and surely a journey without end, as you will never stop learning how to live life plentifully. It's a journey that will lead you to extraordinary places. Moreover, it’s a personal journey, as I think everybody has to find out for him or herself what happiness is, where it lies, and how to make it a part of yourself.

Get out of your comfort zone, and lose yourself in Nature!!

Don’t you ever have a feeling of restlessness? A feeling urging you to get out, explore, experience, live.

I believe that for most people, if not all, it is fundamental to once in a while get out of our comfort zone, and get lost in the big beautiful world. I say comfort zone, because that’s where most of us reside the biggest part of our lives. It’s the place where all is guaranteed: food, home, money, security. It consists of the limits we ourselves create to get a feeling of comfort and being protected.

But it’s like living only half. Since when does someone fully live whilst remaining forever in the comfort zone? Since when does anyone get the feeling of being truly alive if you never dare to challenge yourself, to push your boundaries, to take the risk, and in the process, find your true self?

In the last few years I have been on different journeys, and especially the last two times have been incredibly mind-opening and boundary-pushing. It isn’t always nice nor fun to get out of your comfort zone. You encounter a lot of personal limitations, prejudices, and weird stuff you never knew you possessed. You get tired faster, as you learn so much. You get confused because you have to redefine who you are.

But the experience is worth it. You get a better idea of who you are, in good and bad times. You get the opportunity to change the things you don’t like about yourself. You feel alive. You live experiences you’ll never forget.

Don’t you just love being alive? But… are you alive, consciously, fully, completely alive? You should ask yourself that question once in a while. Because it’s only too easy to fall into a waking sleep, and miss out the most spectacular moments in live, which at the same time we normally consider so ordinary.

Personally, I cannot wait until the next time I can get out, into the wild. I cannot wait until I can again measure myself against the great mountains. To climb a mountain, is to learn to be humble, and at the same time have endless faith. Climbing a mountain is pushing boundaries, its suffering deeply at times, but knowing that, once you’re there, you enter into the world of the mystic, of the spiritual, because, dear reader, on top of the mountain the divine exists in all its glory. On the top it is where you fall in love with life, and inevitably, with the mountains.

“You don’t really conquer a mountain. You conquer yourself. You overcome sickness, and everything else – your pain, aches, fears – to reach the summit”

“Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, they are the cathedrals where I practice my religion.”

"Each fresh peak ascended teaches something."

"I love to think of Nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through
which God speaks to us every hour, if we only tune in"

“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

What I learnt from climbing a mountain/ Lo que aprendí de escalar una montaña

Until the moment when I saw this quote I had no idea how to put my recent experiences into words. But now the words flow freely once more.

How true it is. You never conquer a mountain. A mountain is unconquerable. It is a magical place with its own personality and it is subject to no one but Time. It is a place you travel to, passing through hardships and obstacles, and once you’ve survived all that you will be rewarded.

The reward may be beautiful sights, it may be new experiences. It may even be the acquisition of knowledge and insights about life itself.

It is no wonder that in many religions the mountain is symbol of divinity. Didn’t the Greek gods live on the mountain Olympia? Didn’t Moses receive the Ten Commands on a mountain? There are infinite examples of how mountains are intimately bound to many religions, being either the place where divine events occur or where the divine beings live.

Even I perceive this magical feeling high up in the mountains. It’s hard to be an atheist in such a wild, merciless and beautiful realm. The cold, the deep blue lakes, the brave few plants who survive there, the hard rock, the clouds soaring by, the biting wind. It all surrounds you. And because of this grandness and omnipresent being of the mountain, you will feel that there is more between heaven and earth. You will feel that this mountain has personality, and that despite permitting you to be there now, it could just as easy turn your back to you and make you perish.

The knowledge I have gained on the day I climbed up to a mountain to 2600 meters was something I already knew since some time, but had never really felt the importance of it:

Climbing a mountain is the perfect metaphor for living a life. What the end goal is isn’t important. What matters is nothing more and nothing less than the journey itself, and what decisions you make during that grand adventure.

Every single step in your life you must take with mindfulness. Don’t go rushing to your final goal, because then you will miss the whole point of life’s journey and the probability that you fall and fail will increase greatly.

Love each step, care for it and observe it. Some steps might be hard, some might be easy, and there might come a moment when you consider it impossible to continue. But you have to believe in yourself, and continue, because knowledge and life experiences will be the reward. Understand that with every step you will learn something if you are open-minded enough. Understand that without all the previous steps you would not be at this point right now.

So, what am I trying to say to you, dear reader, is this; visit the mountains. High or low, many mountains can give you unforgettable experiences. Not only for their beauty and serenity, but also for their lessons.

The high mountains will teach you to be humble, but it will also make you feel more alive and connected to this beautiful Earth than ever before.

No realmente conquistas a una montaña.  Conquistas a tu mismo.

Seasonal changes/ Cambios estacionales

The last few days it has started to rain.

If you live in a rainy country, you might ask yourself: well, this not a very interesting thing to talk about! But here, in the part of Spain where I live, we don't have rain for several months a year, so the arrival of the first end-of-summer rains feels like a true blessing.

The joy and lightness one feels at waking up to a fresh, green, and bright world. If there is one thing I love, it is to awaken early in the morning when it has just rained. Beautiful. The world is full of life and the mountains look so clear. The landscape of dark clouds, greens and sometimes a little sunshine is spectacular.

It is the arrival of seasonal change that I adore. In a place where it can snow nearby in the mountains, but in the summer the temperatures reach up to 35 degrees, the seasonal changes are an extraordinary event if you take the time to observe it, and I welcome them with joy and admiration.

And now, although there is a possibility that the temperatures will go back to its former summer level, I know that the summer’s grip has been broken. I know that there will come an end to this summer. And days like these, so fresh and alive, are full of promises. Promises of new life in the nature, of cooler temperatures and amazing thunderstorms, of the end of forest fires. Of the start of a new season for me to explore the world on foot. Summer is not the best time for hiking if you live in a Mediterranean climate, but when the seasons change, it's such a joy!

I cannot wait to get out my hiking equipment and walk, walk, walk through nature and feel the life energy that is in every plant and animal, in every landscape and in every cloud formation.

How very, very beautiful is this world. You only have to open yourself to its splendor and beauty, and you will see, with both your eyes and soul.

Spring! / ¡Primavera!

Almond blossoms- Oltà
If someone would ask me what my favorite season is, I would honestly not know it. Every season I love for its uniqueness, its own characteristics, its own ambient it brings with it. I love them all just as much, also because I know that they will all eventually come, and it seems useless to not like one. It only makes certain seasons harder for yourself ;)

But anyways: a season that I certainly live with joy and a growing lightheartedness is spring.

Spring is the time of life when nature awakens again from its winter sleep, and every living being is busy with new life. Flowers appear wherever is possible, insects hum in their search for fresh food, animals choose this time of the year to bring new life to earth. And with so much happy busyness human don’t remain unaffected. When I am out in nature, I feel myself hum with joy and energy and pleasure. Spring just makes me very happy!

And it seems, with these last few days, that spring is here, with its sunrays and clear skies and warmer wind, ready to let nature once again unfold. The colder winter months seem to have passed. Here. Because in the rest of Europe there are still a lot of places which spring has not yet reached. But it will come. Without doubt, without effort. Because time passes effortlessly :)

Mountains. Surely there are a lot of people who absolutely love mountains. Others might not care about it. But maybe this short text of mine will be liked with my fellow mountain lovers.

From below, a mountain seems fairly two dimensional. Meaning that you see its height, its width, and only a little more. People who never take the effort to climb a mountain will never find that on the mountain a whole new world awaits them, ready to be explored, and most of all, to be contemplated for its beauty.

I have explored many mountains in my region. Not very tall mountains, but very beautiful and far away from the chaotic world.  And every time I climb a new mountain I’m surprised about all the new places there are to explore, places that people who never climb a mountain would never see. Actually, I feel quite privileged that I can see all those beautiful places, where I feel so at home.

There are still so many mountains to explore just in my region, that I’m just stunned by all the beautiful mountains that will surely exist in the rest of my country, and going further; in the rest of the world!

Dear reader: go up the mountain. Go and see what a beautiful place a mountain is. Respect it (and the nature, of course!), and contemplate it, and fall in love with it. make beautiful pictures, tell your friends about it, and decide to explore more and more mountains. Simply because it’s so much fun :)

Here are a couple of photos I have made on my trips through the mountains :) hope you like them!

He explorado muchas montañas en mi región.

Living / Vivir

How long, how very, very long is a human life (for a human then, of course, comparing with the Earth our lifespan is nothing). Just imagine it, living 70, 80, maybe even 90 or a 100 years! How many months, days, hours. How many moments worth never forgetting…

And of course, I’m saying this, with my 19 years. Not very much yet. I feel as if I’m at the beginning of a very long, beautiful, marvelous road. Or maybe better said, that my life is as a book, and I’m only yet at the very first pages (although pages very well filled, as in my 19 years of life I have already lived and seen a great deal).

I’m looking forwards to living. I’m looking forwards to experiencing all the experiences possible. My soul is curious. In part of the experiences I will live individually, but in part also for the experiences I will live by the side of the ones I love. I know I will live good and bad experiences, and I’ve decided to no longer fear the possible bad experiences. I know that some will certainly come, because life is not only made up from good moments. But I’ve lived enough of them to know how valuable the lessons are learnt from them.

I wish to live. And I wish that, for the ones I love, they will have a long, happy life. I know everyone wishes that…but nevertheless that is one of my deepest wishes. A long happy life to all. As long, of course, as that is what they desire. ..

I wish that one day I will find myself in the high mountains, on a bright spring day being outside, watching life reappear, walking side by side to the one I love, both slowed a little by old age. I wish to see the wrinkles of joy on his face, and feel as safe as I have ever felt in his embrace, and talk about our long life together. I wish to then think back at my life and know I have lived at the fullest, that I have been true to my ideals and that I have tried my very best to spread joy and happiness and peace through the world.

I’m not planning on going from this world before I have done all that I have proposed myself to do. I’m ambitious. And considering the great amount of things I want to do, I suppose I will have a pretty long life if I even want to do half of it ;)

I now value life, and also my life more than ever. Because of all that I have lived through. I now value it more, because I see clearly how fragile it is, concerning death, and what a miracle it is concerning birth. Life is truly something amazing, and maybe it would be nice to stop once in a while with what you’re doing and be grateful for your own life and that of your loved ones. We take life too much for granted.

A bit of a mix of thoughts today, I know, but there is so much I’d like to express but so little time (yes, I’ve got to go and study now instead of writing nice texts haha)

A Universe of love /Un Universo de amor

I have a whole lifetime before me. And surely I will write many great, beautiful, true texts. I don’t really doubt about that. It seems like I have been blessed by the capacity of writing (not at high level, but good enough for people to like it).

But I doubt that even in a whole lifetime, with all the thousands of attempts I will have to write, I will be able to achieve to express all the love I feel in me, all the love I feel for the person I love most in this world. Because it has so many different aspects, so many different parts... This love is something so great I am unable to understand it with my physical mind. Once I start meditating about it, more and more ideas come to me, and how deeper I go in the mysterious, beautiful world of love the more amazed I become, because it seems infinite, a entire Universe of love. Infinite, and almost a spiritual road through life. I think that, by loving truly, the spirit is, without doubt, happy.

Maybe you might think “oh, this girl is madly in love, all happy hormones and biochemicals rushing to her mind” Well, let me say this to you: I don’t love madly, I love Deeply. Deep as the ocean, deep as the earth itself. My nature is to love, and to give all of me. I don’t love madly, I’m not someone who “happens to fall in love”, and falls out of love after a short time. No, once I love someone, once I choose to love someone, it’s for life. I say choose, because somehow it was never something that overcame me, starting to love. It was like a desire made long ago by my soul and that at the right moment and the right time became fulfilled. I don’t know how to explain all of this…it is all so abstract and pretty far away from the typical “falling in love stories” I hear from others.

All I know is that, no matter how much I will write, never will all the words of the world be enough to express all my love. It’s something much more than just a physical experience. To me it’s more an experience of the soul than anything else. And with this I’m not just referring to the love I feel for this one person, but also the love I feel for the ones I care about, for the nature, and for the beauty of this world. Basically, this is about the love I feel for the entire Universe.

P.S. The photo's I made yesterday. They don't really have very much to do with the text of today, apart from reflecting the beauty I see in the world :)

Tengo toda una vida delante de mí. Y seguramente que escribiré muchas, verdaderas y hermosos textos. No me cabe duda.

Part of all, never alone / Parte del todo, nunca sola

Gracias :D

The following is a text I wrote long ago, on the 28 of July. But I want to put this text here, as there are some ideas I would like to share with you

Today, on top of the mountain, we stopped a moment to contemplate the beauty of nature in the hours of sunset and feel the atmosphere of calm and harmony that radiated Earth.

And suddenly there came to my mind, an idea of how much gratitude I feel. For being in this wonderful place, with two people with whom I share many ideas and I have many things in common and with whom I feel like who I truly am. For still being in this world, for never have given up completely and for always have had people who loved me and helped. For living in this world at this time, for having the opportunities to learn and live. I felt gratitude for all, for all that is expressible through words, and for all the infinite things for which I will never be able to find the words.
I felt infinite gratitude, my whole being was filled with it. And I felt in total harmony with it all, feeling the universal energy filling me with energy and joy and love.
And the I knew: I Am. I exist. I am energy. I am part of the universe. I am a both a unique being as well as part of the whole.
Part of all, never alone.
It was as if I remembered a great truth, that made me open my eyes and made me see everything, “the bigger picture"
I miss words, so many words to describe that experience, but honestly, it's been an experience of the soul truly amazing

 Thanks :D
